We bring you tidbits from 2008 to bookend a year that was memorable, in some respects, it influenced the lives of all Filipinos everywhere in ways both large and small. We’re skipping politics, scandals and mayhems. In our book, these are the newsmakers of 2008:

1. A fitting highlight to 2008 was Manny Pacquiao’s historic win over Oscar dela Joya in Las Vegas. The TKO victory was even made sweeter as reporters around the world reckoned Manny as the underdog. He is now officially the biggest and richest Filipino sports personality.  Ka-ching!

2. It was Charice Pempengco’s appearance at the Ellen DeGeneres show at first. And then with Oprah, followed by appearance at Good Morning America and then performances alongside big names like David Foster, Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. Her rise to international fame at a young age is nothing short of phenomenal.

3. After losing her mother at the age of 13, Arnel Pineda was forced to fend for himself. He joined his first band when he was 15 and was writing and singing in between gigs. A performance uploaded on youtube lead to his discovery to replace the lead vocalist Steve Perry of the famed American group Journey. The rest is history. Be advised, get a tissue or two if you decide to watch the video.

4. A little clap clap here, shuffle shuffle and point your finger in the air. The Papaya Dance became popular during early part of the year and even landed an appearance on Good Morning America.  The dance craze swept supermarkets and tourist destinations. Some people declared, Papaya is the new Macarena.

5. The videos that followed may not have reached the same heights as the Thriller video on YouTube, dubbed as one of the most popular viral videos by Time magazine in 2007, but the country’s orange-jumpsuited accused murderers, kidnappers, rapists and drug dealers continue to draw crowds on their monthly program exercises in Cebu city. Their videos on YouTube still draw thousands of hits on the internet where it all started from. And so the beat goes on.
