(Dino Dela Rosa writes for the entertainment section of the Virginia-based The Manila Mail)
I saw the matinee performance last Sunday of the Broadway musical “Gypsy” at the Little Theater Of Alexandria. Based on the memoirs of legendary ’30s entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee, it tells of her fiercely controlling mother Mama Rose who pushes her and her sister June into showbusiness during the Depression era, and the lengths her mother will go to make big stars of her kids. After it premiered on Broadway in 1957 with the great Ethel Merman as the original Rose, it had won many Tony awards and has been revived countless times.
The splendid production at the Little Theater Of Alexandria is a testament to the show’s enduring legacy. One of the cast members was Filipino-American thespian Mickey Daguiso who was exceptional in the role of Tulsa. He is the one and only son of local filmmaker Jun Daguiso. Read more

Filipino-Canadian tenor Jeffrey Halili will perform as Goro in Florida Grand Opera’s Madama Butterly and will run from April 25 to May 16 this year in Miami, Florida. Just recently, he played Bardolfo in last season’s New York City Opera revival of Verdi’s Falstaff. According to Opera News, “the tenor attacked the role with the brio and all-out physicality of a gymnast.”
This young tenor has performed in numerous big opera houses including the Minnesota Opera, Michigan Opera Theater, New Orleans Opera, and Virginia Opera in productions such as La Traviata, Turandot, Agrippina, and Lucia di Lammermoor. He has likewise performed in concerts with Philadelphia Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, and the Buffalo Philharmonic.
Jeffrey took tap and ballet lessons in his younger years. He received his Bachelor’s in Vocal Performance from the State University of New York, his Master’s degree in Vocal Performance from Indiana University, and also studied in the Academy of Vocal Arts.

(Excerpt from Amorsolo by Alfredo Roces, 1975)
Without a doubt Amorsolo was the most popular painter in the Philippines. School children became familiar with his paintings of Philippine views through reproductions in their text books. Many humble nipa hut in the countryside or makeshift shanty in an urbanized town was brightened by a calendar showing colored reproductions of Amorsolo paintings. His paintings were even reproduced in postage stamps. HIs original works are displayed in private mansions and public edifices. In this sense, he was a household word.
His vision of the rustic scene was of gentle, romanticized women in what today seems like theatrically native costumes, gathering mangoes or planing rice. While it was portrayed of his subjects in nostalgic poses, Read more
