There aren’t too many places in Manila where you can escape its chaotic traffic, the deafening sounds of jeepneys and buses, and the maddening crowd of the shopping malls. But there is this one place right in the middle of Manila where you can relax, have some peace and quiet, or even practice zen meditation.
Paco Park, located along General Luna Street in Paco, Manila is a haven amidst the chaotic city of Manila. The circular cemetery was built in the late 1700s where the remains of the ilustrados were interred. The niches are now empty when the remains were transferred to other cemeteries in early 1900s. The remains of Philippine’s national hero, Jose P. Rizal was first interred here before his remains was transferred to Rizal Park. The park which was converted into a national park in 1966 has the rustic ambience of old Manila. Admission here is free.
The park has been the hang-out of students of nearby schools who cram for exams, a favorite promenade of lovers, and history buffs. The church inside the park is also a favorite venue for weddings. “Paco Park Presents” is held here every Friday evening featuring musical performances of local and foreign artists. Admission here is likewise free.
Paco Park is open everyday except Wednesday from 8:00 to 5:00 pm and every Friday by sunset.
