Alchemy

Alchemy is touted as a one-stop-clubbing destination which boasts of three floors that offer a variety of music genres and styles, several bars and a first rate coffee shop . I thought, wow! Something like Lulu’s in Washington DC or the Embassy Club at the Fort?  We visited Alchemy in Silver city near Tiendesitas and Valle Verde last March of 2009.

The first two levels were closed for renovation so we ended up on the third floor. We were told that they were working to improve the club and will be open and become fully functional pretty soon. Once inside, I found it strange that on a Friday and at 12 midnight, there’s not a lot of people. Where have all the party animals gone? Could alchemy be feeling the pinch of recession? It was quite empty that you could literally fit 2 or more cars inside. Since there’s more couches than people, you would think you’d be able to get a comfy corner to sit down and enjoy your cold drinks. Wrong! Those empty seats are reserved by some VIP’s or whoever that came in towards 1 or 2 o’ clock in the morning. This situation is common in clubs though. We settled and cozied close to the bar and waited another 30 minutes or so until some young giddy party ladies stormed the dance floor and warmed it up and everybody followed suit.

If you have been to Embassy Club at the Fort, you probably will agree with me that you just can’t put Alchemy and The Embassy in the same sentence in the context of hip, style, state of the art or upscale. It may just be wrong timing on my end or it rubbed me the wrong way, but that is my first impression. I’ve seen pictures of this club on the web when I did my research but it was different when we were there. On the other hand, alchemy has a pretty good sound system. The crowd is predominantly young but not student type which makes it more welcoming to different age group. I also find it less intimidating. My nieces find the little reception area on the third floor nice to have your photo taken with the word Alchemy written all over the wall, sort of like those Hollywood red carpet events where celebrities strike a pose for the paparazzi. The cover charge is P500 which entitles you for two drinks.
